This post is part of an ongoing series of articles featuring our business members and how they’ve been dealing with the COVID-19 health crisis. Please support our Chardon community by shopping locally!
The American Cancer Society’s Discovery Shop helps support the fight against cancer through the sale of high quality, gently used, donated merchandise. For over 40 years, the Society has owned and operated these specialty resale stores, featuring items such as clothing, accessories, jewelry, furniture, artwork, antiques, collectibles, and other household items.
How long have you been in business?
How has your business or organization been impacted by COVID-19? What additional challenges are you facing?
We re-opened on May 22nd after being closed during the Ohio mandated shut down. The fundraising mission of the ACS has certainly been impacted as many of the events are in-person (Relay for Life, Making Strides, etc.). Like others, we have seen reduced foot traffic in the store and a reduction in our volunteer workforce.
What have you done to adapt?
Currently we are still open with reduced hours to allow for extra time in the afternoon for sanitizing. We limit the number of people in the store and have a mandatory mask policy. The policy is in place to protect not only our customers, but also our volunteers that operate the store. Volunteers come in before the store opens to process merchandise.
What is something you would like people to know about your business or organization?
We appreciate the continued support of our customers and the donations from the community. Both parts are necessary for our continued success/survival. We hope that people will continue to shop and support the mission of the American Cancer Society.
How can the local Chardon community help?
Keep cleaning out those closets and come shopping when you’re done!
